I can honestly say that I have tried most of the strains BC Black has dropped in Ontario; Landslide, Hawaiian Pineapple and now Biscotti Cake. This cultivar is a cross of biscotti sundae and wedding cake. The bag is super fresh, packaged July 4, 2022 with 2.35% terps and 30% THC. What I really like about BC Black are all of the affiliated growers, and Biscotti Cake was grown by Krazy Krystal.

The Nose/Appeal/Grind/Dry Toke: 4.5/5

When I opened the bag its strong aroma hit me immediately, it’s very sweet and very earthy. This particular bag had a 3.25g nug that made up most of the eighth. The grind was a little disappointing, as it didn’t fluff up the way I expected it to. Although, the dry toke was full of sweet flavours and it’s easy to understand why these cultivars are called cakes.

The Burn: 4.25/5

Ive smoke 5 joints from this bag and the sweet flavonoids continued through each jay while it burned. It lost some points because each joint did burned slightly uneven. Not a canoe effect but the flower seemed to burn slightly faster than the paper. However, the taste and effects made up for the minor imperfection.

The Buzz: 4.75/5

Where this stuff lacked a little in the burn it makes up for in the buzz. It is a true indica that melts my body and mind. However, it’s not so head heavy that you can’t do anything at all. At 30% THC, it hits right in its weight class and this strain is not for people who aren’t accustomed to smoking strong cannabis. Another characteristic I really enjoyed is the creative vibes that came along with it. If you’re a creator that likes to smoke weed before you get to work, this flower is for you.

The Roach: 90/100

I really enjoyed this buzz, it hit me just right after a long day at the office. If you get a chance, this Biscotti Cake is most certainly worth a try, along with anything else that comes from this collection of growers. I would place BC Black amongst the top 10-15 cannabis producers in the Canadian market. 2 years ago, this might not be a great spot, but with so many amazing producers now, that still makes Joint Venture Craft Cannabis one of the best!

Quick Toke: Lot 420 Off Menu – Icy C – Review – Updated.

Sometimes, luck strikes twice. I was provided with a sample of Off Menu, from our friends at Lot 420. This batch is Icy C, which is a Gelato 33 and Wedding Cake cross. However, the cultivars for Off Menu will rotate similar to the various Pheno’s by Carmel.

Nose/Grind/Dry Toke: 4.5/5

The nose is super cakey and strong, right when you open the jar. This weed might stink up your room a bit. It breaks up perfectly, as I like to see with dense nugs that are covered in trichomes. The dry toke is very sweet, creamy and little funky on the pallet. Everything you hope and expect from a cakey cannabis strain.

The Smoke: 4.5/5

The smoke is smooth and the flavours of cake and cream are dominant. I also picked up a decent amount of gas, which adds a great nuance to the flavour and aromas of the flower.

The Buzz: 4.95/5

It doesn’t hit like a truck but it could still knock you over if you smoke too much. After smoking this more and more and thinking about the effects of the high, I had an epiphany. This is the most clear headed indica flower I have smoked to date. All of the amazing body effects that a heavy indica gives me but mentally, I was fully functional. As a result, I had to update the blog and improve my rating.

The Roach & Overall Score: 93/100

If you love cakey weed like I do, this strain might be perfect for you. I truly love that this strain exists because it would be ideal in many situation where you want to calm your body but still have the ability to complete tasks and communicate normally. I also enjoy the idea of rotating cultivars, especially as the OCS makes it so difficult to have any cannabis sku approved. I am really looking forward to Apples & Banana’s as well as Area 41; 2 more strains which are set to drop in future batches of Off Menu.

Quick Toke: Pistol and Paris, Orange Tingz

I am sometimes lucky enough to receive free samples from licensed cannabis producers for the purpose of creating product familiarity for myself and my cannabis staff. Recently, that luck meant a 1 gram sample of Orange Tingz from Pistol and Paris (LOT # CC28FEB2022.001 – packaged February 28, 2022) and somehow still as fresh as daisy picked this morning.

Nose/Grind/Dry Toke: 4.75/5

The flower had a strong and wonderful orange/citrus aroma when opening the jar. It grinds perfectly like kinetic sand and rolls up tightly. The dry toke reminded me of an orange creamsicle which I couldn’t get enough of. I must have taken 20 or 30 dry tokes before I finally lit this joint.

The Smoke: 4.75/5

It smoked as nicely as I imagined after a great grind, roll and dry toke too. The flavor of orange and citrus remain constant throughout the joint and only dissipated slightly as it got closer to the roach.

The Buzz: 4.5/5

At approximately 26% THC and 3.26% terps, I expected this flower to slap… and it does. I rolled a 0.55 gram joint and only smoked 3/4ths of the joint before I was feeling the effects. This weed smokes above it’s THC percentage and the high lasted longer than many. I was floating in the clouds and it helped me leave my worries behind.

The Roach & Overall Score: 93/100

This cannabis would pair perfectly with a Collective Project, Blood Orange Yuzu and Vanilla. It has all of the orange and creamy tones in the aroma, dry toke and hot yiff. The high was relaxing and definitely felt more like an indica, but not so heavy that I went into couch-lock. In my opinion, this is some of the best cannabis flower being produced in Canada right now. Let’s hope this trend continues.

What’s What With Weed?! Tommy’s Craft Grape Galena

Yo, yo! It’s your boys, the Cann Man and Johnny Fry. April is finally here and the OCS dropped a huge batch of new cannabis strains in time for 4/20. One of the strains that caught our attention out of the gate was, Tommy’s Craft Grape Galena. And yes, the Tommy in Tommy’s Craft is the one and only, Tommy Chong.

Grape Galena is an indica dominant cannabis strain known to contain high levels of the cannabinoid, CBG (A.K.A. the “bliss molecule”). It’s genetics are a cross between (OG Kush Breath x Lost Sailor) and Platinum Kush. As per Mendo Cannabis Medical, the flower’s “silvery moon rock-like nugs are packed with caryophyllene, limonene, and humulene delivering big on cherry, sour berries and grape candy.”

The Flower

CM: The buds are medium to small in size with very dense hues of purple throughout. The nose on this flower is nothing like I have smelled before, it smells like red wine. And not hints of red wine either, this baby is all red wine. The nugs were also super fresh and it has that kinetic sand like texture out of the grinder. A cannabis snob might try to take some points away for the medium and small nugs, and as cool as large buds are, quality buds is what really matters, and this is all that.

JF: I agree, Cann Man. If anyone is complaining about size when trying this cannabis, they are missing the point. This bud smells and tastes awesome and will get you a strong buzz going. Thats the point.

Where I diverge from your experiece is smell. I did not get only a hint of red wine. As I enjoyed the smell I found myself thinking blueberry muffins. And not real blueberry smell. Like fake blueberry muffins you would buy at Costco. Weird. Anyway, everyone is different and whether you experience wine, blueberry muffin or both you are in for a treat.

The Smoke

CM: I really wanted to love this strain… and I do. The smoke on this matches the flower. On the pallet, I get all of the fruity grape goodness I hoped for. The flavour is very similar to Platinum Grapes from Organnicraft. The ash burned mostly white and I don’t have one bad thing to say about the smoke on this delicious flower, buds.

JF: I have a hard time getting strong flavours from Cannabis. Whether thats because I smoke too much or have had one too many cigarrettes in my day but whenever I get strong tasting Cannabis, I slow down and take notice. This stopped me right in my tracks. Grape all day. Great stuff.

The High

CM: I smoked half of a 1g joint on my walk to the Blue Jays game. I wanted to help ease my nerves of being in a building with 48,000 people for the first time in a few years. This was the perfect strain for it. I’m not sure if it was the CBG, but I was definitely blissful and calm. This is everything I want in an indica strain; calming, peaceful and it didn’t give me any couchlock.

JF: I really enjoyed the high on this also. I smoked a full gram and had a similar experience to you, Cann Man, except that I did get a ton of couch lock. So, all you novice smokers, take it easy on this strain as it sounds like it may put you in a hole the more you smoke.

The Roach

CM: Tommy’s Craft, Grape Galina is a must try! I am hoping that this is not just a limited batch run, as I want a lot more where this came from. The flower is beautiful, dense and purple, the smoke is smooth and tastes like grapes and the high is blissful. Come on! It does not get much better than this, especially at a reasonable $40 CAD for an eighth. Trust me, and pick some up ASAP!

JF: Listen to the Cann Man. Get some while you can. There is a ton to love. Fingers crossed that Tommy’s Craft keeps going with this strain and is able to maintain or increase this level of quality. If they do, we may have an early competitor for Best Flower of the Year on our hands.

What’s What with Weed?! They put the Maple in Maple Kush, eh…

Hello fellow Cannaseurs and welcome to another addition of What’s What with Weed?! This week we are taking a dive into a product that any cold blooded Canadian can appreciate, Organic Maple Kush by The Green Organic Dutchman. As noted on TGOD’s website, Maple Kush is “a certified organic indica bud grown in living soil, getting its name from the maple syrup used to feed the soil it grows in.” For those asking, growing in “living soil” refers to a method of growing in which focuses on microbial life in the growing medium (soil) opposed to the addition of man-made nutrients. Essentially, microorganisms create a food web within the soil and creates a symbiotic relationship with the plants. Pretty cool if you ask us. For more details, check out wholegrow.com.

Now, why this product you may ask? We have recently both become a lot more interested in the idea of organic cannabis cultivation (i.e. living soil) and how these organic growing techniques can influence different outcomes when harvesting (i.e. increased cannabinoid content, larger yields, etc.) and how does these outcomes translate to the customer (i.e. better product, higher or lower price, consistency of product, etc). While these questions are both interesting and relevant to this blog, they can’t be answered in a day and will require significant amounts of research, so maybe best left for another time. That being said, we can start looking at some new organic products to get the ball rolling and see how they stack up to the rest of the market.

The Flower

JF: Properly sealed in a glass jar, the buds I received were squishy but dense enough, very sticky with a nice dark green color and had a mild floral smell with a kushy finish that improved after a couple of days of rehydration with a new boost pack. The nugs were decently sized with my 3.5 grams coming in buds (two medium, two small). The trim wasn’t exactly pristine but wasn’t the worst I’ve seen from an OCS product at all. Thoughts Cannman? I would be interested to hear if our batches were of consistent quality.

CM: Consistent indeed! The flower is in these glass jars is most often 3-4 decent sized nugs. Another cool feature is the dark green, tinted glass that you can actually slightly see through. My only complaint is that the flower is a little more dry than I like, but as Jonny Fry said, a couple days with a hydro pack and it’s almost perfect.

The High

JF: I really loved the high off this bud. It was nice and strong, couch locked me and put me to sleep. I felt the high in my body and behind my eyes which is exactly what I am looking for from a night time Kush. Honestly, this reminded me of an old school AA-AAA Pink Kush from the black market days. Cannman?

CM: Absolutely. This stuff slaps as hard as Will Smith at the Oscars. Honestly, I was surprised by how hard it hit me. For THC in the 23-24% range it hits above it’s weight class. I found the high to last longer than the average as well, which was a bonus.

The Smoke

JF: I was not as impressed with the quality of smoke and taste on this item. I was really hoping this is where the organic growing techniques would shine. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The taste wasn’t all that pleasant (although nothing terrible) and the burn was fine at best. This may be an issue with the curing of the plant, as opposed to the growing techniques themselves but was a bit of a let down, none-the-less. I wouldn’t let this turn you off of this item but its not going to be a selling point either.

CM: I am with you on that Jonny, the taste was okay but nothing special. Although, the ash does burn nice and white for the most part; however, it was lacking something on the pallet. I was really hoping for maple and only got kush. Not the worst thing in the world, that’s for sure!

The Roach

JR: This isn’t bad weed by any stretch of the imagination. Its strong, smells decent, and although it doesn’t taste or burn the best, it’ll get the job done. My issue lies more with the price point. $39.99 is a bit steep for me but if you are a casual smoker, looking for a nighttime strain that isn’t going to blow through an HQ in a day like yours truly, this may be a good choice for you.

CM: I would say this is pretty good weed, for the high itself and duration of the buzz. However, not the most flavourful, but not the least either. Definitely has heavy indica effects that are perfect before bed or to just chill the F out. If you can get this at a reasonable price, give it a try and let us know what you think.

Quick Toke: Is the Dynavap Dry Herb Vape Worth It?

Is the Dynavap Dry Herb Vape Worth It? The Dynavap, for those who don’t know, is a battery-free dry herb vaporizer. According to their own description, the “battery-free dry herb vaporizer and has no electronic parts that can fail”. All you need is your weed, a lighter and your Dynavap. However, they recommend using a butane torch or induction heater for optimal results.

In my opinion, this device better for concentrates than flower because of the small oven. As a result, the Dynavap can hold a lot of cannabis concentrate but only a small amount of cannabis flower. One of the Dynavap’s best features is that the device clicks to let you know it’s hot enough to start using.

Quick Tokes

For my first use, I added a couple dabs worth of Indica wax from Blendcraft. Using a butane torch, it only took 15-20 seconds to heat the oven and hear the click. I plugged the airflow chamber and pulled away. The result was a large vape cloud that was flavourful but smooth. I did cough a little on the exhale, but only because I didn’t realize how much vapor I drew on the pull (a lot).

In my second use, I vaped a piece of Okanagan moon rock. For something thick like this, I recommend heating the oven another 3-5 seconds after the click to start vaping. Again, the vapor was smooth and tasted just like the moon rock is supposed to. I was able to go back for 5 or 6 draws until it needed a refill.

The Roach

Overall, the Dynavap works just like it is intended. My favorite thing about this battery-free dry herb vape, is that you can smoke any concentrate or flower that you like. Especially handy for people growing and pressing their own concentrates. The use of the device is very practical; fill, heat, puff, repeat. The Dynavap design is simple, functional and high-quality. Bonus points for the 10mm mouth piece that fits most bongs. Is the Dynavap Dry Herb Vape Worth It? I highly recommend picking one these up, you probably won’t be disappointed.

What’s What With Weed?! Okanagan Moon Rock

We figured it was time to take a quick trip to the moon and see what all the hype is about. So Jonny Fry and I each picked up an Okanagan Moon Rock by Moon Rock, and got ready for launch.

In weed-cabulary, moon rocks are nuggets of cannabis flower, soaked in a cannabis extract, then rolled in kief. As you can imagine, the end product is high in THC with a buzz that is more comparable to dabs.

Okanagan Moon Rock by Moon Rock “are hand-trimmed AAA quality indica buds, rolled in full-spectrum oil and then rolled again in high-quality kief for an enhanced smoking experience. Produced in Canada’s famous Okanagan region under LED lights.” The 1.5 gram nug comes in a re-sealable glass jar on top of parchment paper. Enough talk, I’m ready for liftoff.

THE SMOKE

CM: I am going to be honest, I’m a moon rock virgin. I wasn’t sure how to smoke it at first, so I experimented by smoking it 3 different ways; in a joint, a pipe and a concentrate pen.

Firstly, I packed the tip of the joint with my moon rock and lit that baby up. Full disclosure, I was a little high when I rolled this and may have used a larger piece than necessary. None the less, It added a sweet hash flavour to the joint and burned slowly.

In the pipe, I lost the flavours from the moon rock because of the butane in the Bic lighter. Next time, I’ll use a hemp wick, as I’m sure it will taste better.

Lastly, using my Boundless Terp Pen, I was finally able to really enjoy the moon rock. The concentrate used for the Okanagan Moon Rock, looks, smells and tastes like hash oil (can someone please tell me why hash oil isn’t available in the legal market yet?!). It was sweet and smooth and I really enjoyed the way it smoked. I was able to get approximately 10-12 full draws from a very small piece.

JF: Although, not a moon rock virgin, I have not smoked one of these badboys since I purchased one at Marc Emery’s old shop on Church in Toronto about 5 years ago, so I’m glad to hear I wasn’t the only one who struggled to smoke this. I ended up going to pipe route and had the same issue as Cannman. Too much butane! Hemp wicks FTW. The flavour I did get was of distillate with faint hashy flavours which I did not find unpleasant but was not overly impressed with. I found the smoke to be fairly smooth, as noted by the Cannman but I did have had a lingering tickle in my throat that I find comes along with distillate.

THE HIGH

CM: In the joint, I forgot how much moon rock I put in the tip, and smoked the first quarter of the joint before passing to a friend. Needless to say, I was couch-locked for about 30 minutes with my heart-rate around 120 bpm. Luckily, it didn’t last long. The highs from both the pipe and concentrate pen were similar, as expected. I would compare it to a really calming indica + hash high. I melted into my bed that night, though it took awhile for my brain to shut down the same way my body did.

JF: Ahhhh, the elusive couch lock. I was pumped to find I strapped on the ol’ cement shoes and glad you were able to as well, Cannman. As an Indica lover, to say I was over the moon (amirite folks!) is an understatement.

THE ROACH

CM: Haha, good one, Jonny! Overall, I really enjoyed the high and it lived up to it’s name by sending me on a rocket ship to outer space. These are definitely worth trying, especially if you can find it for $30 or less. Take that trip!

JF: For the most part, I agree, Cannman. Despite being a bit of a mess to smoke and not exactly the best tasting cannabis product out there, this product is sure to blast you into orbit.

What’s What with Weed? BOLD Growth vs. Mood Ring

After a bit of hiatus, we are back! We apologize for our absence (life, you know?) but the good news is, there was a big, fat, juicy OCS drop while we were gone! We figured what better way to get back at it then by taking a look at a couple of new products that we were excited to try and seeing how they stack up against one another. This week, we will be looking at Mood Ring’s Craft Golden Berry and Bold Growth’s Root Beer Float.

First lets hear the tale of the tape:

Bold Growth’s Root Beer Float is an indica-dominant hybrid with a lineage of XXX OG and Vanilla Kush. This strain comes in clocking an impressive 26-32% THC range and is hang-dried, slow cured and dry trimmed by hand.

Mood Ring’s Craft Golden Berry is an indica-dominant hybrid with a lineage of Kushberry x Afghani x Cherry Pie. This strain comes in swinging with a respectable 20-25% THC range. The Mood Ring site notes that this bud is carefully sourced, hang dried and handpicked.

So, without further adieu…

The Flower

JF: Let me start with the Root Beer Float. This stuff smelled unbelievable and had them out in the lead, right out of the gate. With bold notes of sweetness, hash and coffee, all I could think of was bourbon (p.s., I also like to booze it up). On the other hand, I found the Craft Golden Berry’s smell to be quite muted. I got some nice whiffs of what smelled like purple punch (likely its cherry pie lineage) but that was about it. The Golden Berry I received was also completely over-dried which may have contributed to the smell. Thoughts, Cannman?

CM: I agree with your “bold” assessment of Root Beer Float. The aroma when I slid the bag open was delectable. The sweet and somewhat bitter scent of chocolate and coffee, combined with dense flowers from top colas are bang on with it’s name. And since we are talking alcohol, it almost reminds me of a light stout (I too, occasionally, booze things up). I found the Craft Golden Berry to have a beautiful fruity aroma when I opened the “tuna” can. It’s my fault that Jonny Fry’s portion was over-dried with less aroma, as I it sat in the mail for a week. That being said, the flower was still more dry with less terpenes than I expected, especially after the Florida Citrus Kush (which may have been the best drop in the summer of 2021).

The Smoke

JF: I feel like Mood Ring’s Craft Golden Berry took a swing back when it came to the smoke. My batch had a nice minty/berry taste in the vape that I found quite pleasant. And it was a nice surprise, considering how dry the bud itself was. On the other hand, I found the Root Beer Float’s amazing smell didn’t transition into flavour as much as I had hoped. What’s your take Cannman, cause I wasnt expecting this turn of events at all…

CM: My thoughts exactly, Jonny Fry. The Golden Berry smoked quite a bit better than expected. The flavour of berry and mint definitely came through. And like JF said, the Root Beer Float was underwhelming on flavour. However, the smoke isn’t everything.

The High

JF: Well, I think this is where the Root Beer Float lands the knockout blow, sinks in the choke, grabs the arm, whatever analogy you want to use…This shit is strong! I was ripped. Can’t say I feel the same about the Craft Golden Berry. Need I say more? Cannman?

CM: Agreed, 100%, and then some (if, that’s possible). The batch of Root Beer Float came in over 30% THC and slapped me harder than Rick James. However, I felt that the Golden Berry actually hit me decently hard for a 20% strain with relatively low terps. Again, that could be due to my flower being more fresh or that I smoked it in a 1 gram blunt, straight to my face.

The Roach

JF: For me, this is a no-brainer. I am going BOLD Growth’s Root Beer Float by first round KO. With a wonderfully strong and unique smell and sky rocketing high, this stuff takes the belt. Although today wasn’t Mood Ring’s day, here’s to hoping we see them get back up with a flower offering that can take them to the top (i.e. more Florida Citrus Kush for the love of god).

CM: This battle was fairly obvious from the start. Root Beer Float is definitely a winner. However, let’s not forget the distinct price difference as well ($45 RBF vs $30 CGB). That being said, Craft Golden Berry is a great budget option. My suggestion would be to use a hydro stone for 30-40 minutes to freshen it up, and you’re good to go!

What’s What with Weed?! ‘Peanut Butter Mac’ Addition.

This week we review Peanut Butter Mac from BLK MKT. Will it live up to its “high” expectations? This strain is a cross between Peanut Butter Breath and Miracle Alien Cookies (MAC). Both delicious and smooth smoking strains when grown right.

The High

CM: When BLK MKT first dropped this strain in spring/summer of 2021, I could not get enough. It was the smoothest and tastiest pre-roll I could get my hands on. I was smoking 3-4 of the 1 gram cannons every week. But, is it really worth the $16 + HST price tag?

Yes. Yes it was. Almost every time. The high is so physically calming while still allowing me to function. I loved sparking these at the Toronto harbourfront, watching all of the people and boats go by. It helped create instant nostalgia for the summer of ’21.

JF: Now that you mention it, I think I joined you for one of these bad boys in the summer, Cann Man. Like hanging out with an old friend, this strong yet mellow, chilled out high is perfect for relaxing, so I dig what you are putting down.

The Smoke

CM: For the most part, these pre-rolls burn really smoothly; however, on occasion, I would get a pre-roll that wouldn’t burn as consistently as others. Sometimes the joint would canoe a little. A quick slap of saliva, and she was fixed. Gross, I know, but it’s an old tradition that still lives for a reason.

Otherwise, the ash was white, the flavour was sweet and savory and my brain was in it’s happy place. Even though the THC ranged from 19-22%, the flower hit a little above its weight class. Smokes like a 22-25% probably because of the terps.

JF: I also had a canoe issue with my most recent pre-roll but other than that, this is a premium product. The savory scent and flavour really stands out for me (anyone else a bit tired of the berry/citrus forward strains?) as although their are a ton of GMO strains kicking around, I feel like PBM is the reigning king of the savoury terp profiles currently on the OCS.

The Roach

CM: Since the summer, I have noticed the quality drop off a little bit. It seems like BLK MKT may have started to put more attention into their other strains. However, it’s still in my top 5 for Canadian drops of 2021. The high, the flavour and the smoothness of the smoke, all round out this incredible flower from BLK MKT. I really hope this thing keeps hitting, so I can create new memories in the future. Giving the phrase “return of the mac” a whole new meaning!

JF: I can’t say I have noticed such a drastic decline in the quality of PBM as you have Cann man but you make a great point. BLK MKT has seen quite a diversification of products over the past year or so (including PBM live rosin…hint, hint) which may be putting a strain on their growing processes and affecting the quality of the Cannabis.
